They’re both on page one. They’re both “ranking.” But one is capturing 30% of clicks for a query, and the other is capturing 3%.
What’s the difference between the number one ranking page and the number five ranking page? Most people assume it comes down to keyword density, meta tag optimization, or some technical trick. The reality is more nuanced — and more interesting.
It's Mostly About Backlink Quality (But Not Quantity)
The single strongest predictor of ranking position within page one is the relevance of the backlinks pointing to a page and its domain. Not so much quantity as it is the quality.
A page with 50 high-quality backlinks from genuinely authoritative, topically relevant websites, such as industry publications, credible directories, and editorial mentions in respected outlets, will outrank a page with 500 backlinks from low-quality sites, private blog networks, and irrelevant directories.
When we look at the gap between position one and position five for competitive keywords, the backlink profile is almost always a central factor. The number one result doesn’t just have more links, it has better ones.

Content Depth and Completeness
Google has become exceptionally good at assessing how completely a page satisfies user intent. Pages that rank in the top positions for competitive queries tend to be substantially more thorough than pages ranking below them.
This doesn’t mean longer for the sake of longer. It means genuinely more useful, covering the topic from more angles, answering the follow-up questions a reader would naturally have, including relevant data & examples, and an expert perspective that makes the page the most comprehensive resource on the subject.
When we audit a page that’s stuck in position five to eight and compare it to one that is ranking first, the content depth gap is almost always visible within two minutes of reading both.
Page Experience Signals
Google’s Core Web Vitals, a set of technical metrics measuring loading speed, visual stability, and interactivity, are real ranking factors. Pages that load faster, display stably, and respond quickly to user interaction consistently outperform slower, clunkier pages when content and backlinks are otherwise comparable.
The gap here is often smaller than people expect, but it’s consistent and real. In a highly competitive space where multiple pages have strong content and link profiles, page experience can be the tiebreaker that determines who sits in position two versus position four.
Click-Through Rate Optimization
Here is one tactic that most marketing teams underinvest in: your title tag and meta description are your advertisement in the search results. A page in position five with a compelling, specific, curiosity-triggering title may earn a higher click-through rate than the page in position two with a generic title.
And because Google monitors CTR as a relevance signal, a page that earns higher clicks relative to its position can actually improve its ranking over time. This means that optimizing your title tags and descriptions is not just a conversion tactic; it’s a ranking tactic.
The Honest Summary
The difference between ranking first and ranking fifth usually comes down to a combination of three things: a stronger backlink profile (quality over quantity), more comprehensive and useful content, and better optimization of the user experience signals that Google watches. None of these are secrets. What they require is sustained, expert attention — plus the patience to let them compound.
The gap between position five and position one is bridgeable. It just requires understanding exactly where the gap is, which is exactly what a skilled SEO audit reveals.
